Three protagonists and a lie from the past

GTA V intertwines Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton and Trevor Philips across Los Santos and Blaine County. A 2004 prologue in North Yankton depicts a failed robbery; the main story takes place in 2013. Michael lives with his family under a different identity, Franklin seeks a way beyond precarious jobs, and Trevor maintains a violent life still shaped by his former partners. Michael’s secret connects their paths and turns criminal cooperation into a conflict over trust.

Franklin meets Michael and Trevor returns

Franklin’s vehicle repossession work brings him into contact with Michael. Their relationship begins to offer an apprenticeship, although Michael is trapped between family, money and the past. A new heist with Lester exposes his return to crime and allows Trevor to discover he is alive. Their reunion does not restore an undamaged friendship: Trevor believes Brad is imprisoned, while Michael knows otherwise. Franklin is caught between two examples of success and failure who need each other as much as they resent each other.

The FIB, Devin Weston and the truth about Brad

Dave Norton and Steve Haines use the group for FIB operations against competing interests, including the IAA. Devin Weston brings business deals whose promises become another source of pressure. Meanwhile, Trevor discovers that Brad died in North Yankton and occupies Michael’s grave. Michael’s supposed retirement concealed an arrangement and a betrayal. Even after their rupture, the Union Depository heist brings them back together. Shared money cannot by itself repair the personal damage.

GTA V’s three endings explained

The final decision belongs to Franklin. Option A leads to Trevor’s death, while option B kills Michael. Option C attempts to save both through a joint confrontation with their enemies, supported by Lamar and Lester, and ends with all three protagonists alive. These are alternative campaign routes: describing one does not erase the others. Even where later content references surviving characters, that should not turn a continuity interpretation into a blanket declaration that the player only ever had one valid choice.

Rockstar North and the character-switching design

Rockstar North led development with other Rockstar teams, releasing GTA V on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013. RAGE supported a new interpretation of Los Santos, distinct from San Andreas’s 2004 map. Character switching alternates neighbourhoods, lifestyles and roles during heists. The city and surrounding region support that structure: travelling can change both landscape and social perspective. Heists, preparation and the trio’s relationships organise a campaign that does not depend on one hero.

Later versions, GTA Online and the cheat guide

GTA V later reached further console generations and PC, with improvements and features depending on the edition. Technical evolution does not turn its campaign into a new story. GTA Online, launched in October 2013, uses the initial world but follows a different progression and receives its own article. Our GTA V cheat guide addresses story-mode codes separately from Online’s rules. This history explains the narrative and its development rather than replacing a mission walkthrough or a current platform guide.
