Tommy Vercetti arrives in Vice City
Set in 1986, GTA: Vice City follows Tommy Vercetti’s rise from Forelli family representative to head of his own criminal empire. After leaving prison, Sonny Forelli sends him into a deal that ends in an ambush. Tommy loses both the money and the merchandise and must recover them. Ken Rosenberg becomes his first ally in a city where the apparent ease of beaches, hotels and clubs conceals violent competition for control of its businesses.
Lance Vance, Cortez and Ricardo Diaz
Investigating the failed deal leads Tommy to Lance Vance, whose brother died during it. Their interests align against Ricardo Diaz, while Colonel Cortez provides contacts and work. Lance’s partnership appears more personal than an ordinary business arrangement. Yet Diaz’s assignments and Tommy’s ambition turn cooperation into a struggle for power. The assault on Diaz’s mansion changes the story’s direction: recovering what was lost gives way to building an independent empire.
Businesses and independence from the Forellis
Tommy acquires properties and businesses that connect income with their own smaller stories. The film studio, club and other assets are more than map markers: they represent authority no longer dependent on Sonny. Characters such as Avery Carrington reinforce the view of the city as a place of investment and coercion. Economic progression therefore supports the rise-to-power narrative. The more Tommy accomplishes independently, the less willing he becomes to let a distant family claim ownership of everything he has built.
The ending: Lance’s betrayal and Sonny’s death
Sonny comes to collect, and Tommy prepares a payment using counterfeit money. Resentful of his position beside Tommy, Lance exposes the plan and sides with the Forellis. Both men die during the defence of the mansion. Tommy survives and retains power with Ken. The ending does not represent escape from crime; it confirms his dominance. That conclusion distinguishes Vice City from later stories in which material success brings irreversible losses or forces a choice between competing tragedies.
How Vice City was created in 2002
Rockstar North developed the game after GTA III and released it on PlayStation 2 in 2002. It continued using RenderWare but changed the tone, architecture, colour palette and protagonist’s presence: Tommy speaks and actively participates in conversations. PC and other adaptations followed. Building on the previous adventure’s foundation allowed the team to establish a distinct identity, with radio stations and an eighties setting that contribute to the storytelling rather than merely accompanying the driving.
Vice City Stories and later editions
Released in 2006, Vice City Stories returns to the city in 1984 with Victor Vance and develops Lance’s background before Tommy’s arrival. That prequel is distinct from an expansion to the 2002 campaign. Mobile versions and The Definitive Edition retain the original story through later adaptations. GTA VI uses the Vice City name in another universe; it does not automatically continue Tommy’s empire or establish that his characters and events carry over into Leonida.
