The key point: not all storage can run a game
For native Xbox Series X|S-optimised games, internal storage or compatible expansion cards differ from USB archives. Seagate’s Series X and S documentation explains that optimised games stored on USB must be transferred to playable storage. This platform rule guides GTA VI preparation without pretending its final installation has been tested.
1. Check your console’s available capacity
Start with Xbox settings’ storage section and check which device is occupied. Series S and Series X versions need not have equal free space, and advertised capacity is not available capacity. Check the actual installation destination; a game appearing in your library does not establish that it is on the internal SSD.
Use the size published for your version when available. A PS5 download report is not a verified Xbox measurement and cannot establish identical Series S and X requirements.

2. Use USB as an archive when freeing space
A local archive can avoid redownloading other games while reorganising a library. The manufacturer lists USB 3.0 or later and at least 128 GB for external game storage; meeting those requirements does not make it an expansion card. A USB-connected SSD remains USB storage despite its advertised speed.
3. Check compatibility rather than the SSD label
A card designed for the Series X|S expansion slot differs from a generic external drive. Check console compatibility and required capacity before purchasing. This is not a price comparison or a claim that one brand is the only choice; no paid service is needed merely to inspect storage.
In a mixed library, an older game launching from USB does not establish that a native Series X|S title can. The manufacturer distinguishes non-optimised games with different playback possibilities. Check the specific product and console storage notice. This explains a common confusion without blaming a cable for a compatibility rule. Older-game exceptions are not extended to GTA VI, and no supposed USB adapter is presented as equivalent to supported expansion storage.

What moving a game does and does not change
Moving data does not purchase a licence, change editions or replace access to the owning account. Before deleting or formatting, distinguish installation, archive and personal data, and check the selected operation. If the console requests moving a game before launch, follow that notice rather than repeatedly swapping cables to overcome a storage limitation.
A final GTA VI preparation checklist without false promises
Check account, licence, free space and destination, then consult official download timing. Preloading does not itself unlock play.
