The short answer: playing needs supported storage

Sony allows PS5 games to run from console storage or an installed compatible M.2 SSD. USB extended storage can hold their data, but it must be copied back before play. This is a PS5 rule, not a GTA VI-specific Rockstar requirement. The guide prepares storage without claiming the game is already downloadable.

1. Check free space before buying a drive

Sony directs PS5 users to Settings > Storage to inspect capacity. Review games, captures and other data before assuming an upgrade is needed. Advertised capacity is not the same as available space. Installation depends on actual free space and the size shown by the store or console for the specific product.

The roughly 210 GB report is not treated as final, and no exact extra patch allowance is invented. Our download-size guide separately explains that figure’s origin.

2. Choose between moving, deleting and expanding

Moving unused games to USB can free playable storage while retaining an archive. Deleting an installation is a different operation from deleting a save. Sony manages these data categories separately; check the selected category before confirming and do not format a drive containing files you want to keep.

3. Check an M.2 SSD against Sony’s requirements

Sony’s requirements checked November 1, 2026 specify compatible PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe storage, suitable dimensions and heat dissipation, recommending sequential reads of at least 5,500 MB/s. The listed capacity range is 250 GB to 8 TB. An advertised speed alone does not replace checking physical and interface requirements.

Follow the official instructions for your console model and update system software before physical installation. This guide requires no specific brand and promises no FPS increase from more storage.

Game files and saved progress are different data categories. Sony’s table separates installations, saves and captures; moving a game to USB does not export its PS5 save to that same drive. For space management, first identify the category using capacity. For progress protection, consult saved-data guidance. Cloud options may require a subscription, but this guide neither activates one nor presents USB game archives as universal backups of every data type.

Where to store and where to play

Archiving versus execution resolves the main confusion. An external USB SSD is still USB storage; the SSD label does not make it an installed M.2 expansion.

Final checks before installing GTA VI

When downloading is enabled, check account licence, free space and installation destination. Preloading, installation and playable access are different states. If more space is requested, follow the console’s actual notice rather than a social-media figure. GTA VI images are editorial context, not hardware photographs or drive benchmarks.
