Stealing a car and making it yours are different decisions
GTA VI distinguishes temporarily using a stolen vehicle from registering it as your own, according to Famitsu’s August 28, 2026 interview with Rob Nelson. IGN’s October 7 interview adds that a phone scanner shows registration cost and sale value. This guide brings those descriptions together as checked on November 2; it is neither a final-copy walkthrough nor a newly announced feature today.
What the phone scanner tells you
In IGN’s described demonstration, the scanner lets you assess a vehicle before deciding what to do with it. Alongside lock, alarm and tracker information, it shows sale value and registration cost. Those figures serve different decisions: earning money from a vehicle or keeping it as personal transport. They do not establish a universal fee or identical conditions for every model.
Our theft-tools guide covers getting into different cars. Here the focus is what comes next: deciding whether a vehicle deserves a storage slot. The official driving image provides context, not a view of the scanner’s final menu.

Three vehicle states to distinguish
Access to a car does not always mean retaining it between sessions. This comparison summarises the interview without turning demonstration examples into rules for every special vehicle.
| Situation | What the source describes | Player decision |
|---|---|---|
| Stolen, unregistered | Temporary use and a grey icon. | Do not assume it will be retained. |
| Personal vehicle | Registration and owned-vehicle storage. | Weigh the cost and available space. |
| Expanded collection | Buying garages to hold more vehicles. | Check actual capacity and terms. |
The initial three spaces are not a game-wide maximum
Famitsu places the three-vehicle storage limit at the beginning and explains that purchasing garages expands the collection. In the example of filling those three spaces and wanting another personal car, Nelson describes selling one to make room. Both qualifications matter: it is initial capacity, and expansion exists. It is not a claim that only three owned cars can exist throughout the story.
The report does not supply a complete garage list with addresses, prices and capacity. We therefore cannot provide verified purchase routes for specific properties. Our housing guide treats safehouses and property as a separate topic.

Why a stolen car may disappear after restarting
The interview describes unregistered stolen vehicles with a grey icon: they remain for a while but disappear when the game restarts. That concerns temporary transport, rather than erasing the garage or save file. It also does not establish that parking on any street makes a car yours. Before treating it as part of your collection, its personal-vehicle status matters.
How personal vehicles connect to weapons
Nelson also connects personal vehicles with weapon storage, giving the car you keep a purpose beyond appearance or speed. Our inventory guide explains equipment access and limits separately. His comparison with Red Dead Redemption 2’s horses illustrates owned versus temporary transport; it does not import that game’s complete mechanics, insurance or stables into GTA VI.
Common questions: selling, registering and expanding
Does theft alone keep a car forever? The interview separates temporary use and registration. Does the scanner guarantee profit? It informs a decision rather than establishing universal earnings. Is three vehicles the maximum? The account describes initial space and garage purchases for expansion. Are all prices and menus known? The cited sources provide no complete catalogue. Official images illustrate vehicles and settings rather than our own final-game session.
