Which rating we checked
The ESRB entry for Grand Theft Auto VI lists M, for ages 17 and older, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. We checked it on October 28, 2026. This is the board’s entry for this game, not an age copied from GTA V. If you manage a child’s account, start with the appropriate entry for your territory and its content information before deciding whether to buy the game or allow access.
Read the content information, not just the letter
ESRB flags intense violence, blood and gore, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, and drug and alcohol use. It also lists in-game purchases. These categories help identify particular concerns; they are not an exhaustive scene list or gameplay instructions. A descriptor should not become confirmation of a specific mechanic, and you should not assume an unspecified settings option removes all of the content involved.
Check the rating’s territory
ESRB is the North American system. We do not automatically convert its M rating into a PEGI label or treat a withdrawn rating screenshot as a current entry. Look up the exact product in your country’s store and the relevant board’s official database. Check the name, platform and territory: an entry for GTA V or a similarly named product does not answer the question about GTA VI.
Set up the child account on PS5
1. Create or review the family group and child account. Use separate accounts; leaving an adult profile open is not equivalent to configuring a child account.
2. On PS5, open Settings, Family and Parental Controls, Family Management, then choose the child. Review game and content restrictions as well as communication settings.
3. Protect settings against unauthorised changes. Sony advises signing the child out and back in when controls are changed during play so that the changes take effect.
Separate content, time and spending
Allowing a game is different from allowing purchases, communication or unlimited playtime. Review these controls separately and agree on understandable family rules. Microsoft documents app and game limits through Family Safety on compatible linked devices; follow the instructions for your device. A time limit does not change a game’s content rating, while a spending limit alone does not prevent access to a game that is already installed.
Review videos and shared accounts too
Trailers, streams and recommended videos are consumed outside the game itself. Review those services’ controls too, particularly on shared devices. An age rating does not measure how many hours somebody will play or guarantee that a promotional video shows all the content. Before release, be cautious about guides promising a child mode or complete violence filter without official documentation supporting that claim.
Frequently asked questions
Does M mean every region uses age 17? No. Check your own territory’s rating and conditions.
Does offline play change the recommended age? No. Connection mode does not remove content warnings.
Where do I check purchases or exceptions? In the platform’s account and family controls, not a supposed universal GTA VI setting.
